Verdad Resources LLC is a Denver-based, privately held oil and gas producer focused exclusively on horizontal Niobrara and Codell development in the DJ Basin’s Wattenberg Field, with offices in Denver, Fort Morgan, and Dallas.

Verdad Resources Holdings LLC has been backed by Dallas-based energy private equity firm Tailwater Capital since September 2022, when Tailwater made its investment in the company. Verdad’s operated business changed hands in early 2026.

On December 18, 2025, Japan Petroleum Exploration Co. (Japex) announced a roughly $1.3 billion deal to acquire Verdad Resources Intermediate Holdings (Japex’s largest-ever deal and its first operated U.S. asset position) through a newly formed subsidiary, Peoria Resources Acquisition Company. At the time of the transaction, Verdad’s assets were producing about 35,000 barrels of oil equivalent (BOE) per day, with Japex targeting growth to roughly 50,000 BOE per day by 2030. To achieve this target, they plan to double the number of wells in production from 1,000 to approximately 2,000 wells.

Verdad Resources accounts for for 7.16% of Colorado’s oil production and 2.05% of the state’s natural gas production with 1.06% of the state’s active wells (for the 12 month period ending in July 2026). Their operate exclusively within the Denver Julesburg Basin, primarily in Weld County (98%).

Verdad Resources owns and operates 581 wells at 167 oil and gas locations, of which 82% are active, and 12% are plugged and abandoned. They operate 52 low-producing wells, 2 of which are within one mile of a Colorado school.

In the past five years, Verdad Resources has drilled or hydraulically fractured wells at 30 locations, with a median of 8 wells per location, in line with the statewide median of 8 wells per location. Since 2013, its hydraulic fracturing operations have consumed 5.89 billion gallons of water and 3.08 million tons of sand. Half of the hydraulic fracturing operations conducted by Verdad Resources in 2025 consumed 18.8 million gallons or more water, enough to fill 29 Olympic-sized swimming pools, or to irrigate 40 acres of Colorado farmland for an entire year.

Only 45 of Colorado’s 311 active operators currently have wells in any pre-production state (permitting, drilling, or waiting on completion). Verdad Resources is among them, with 34 active well permits and 39 wells being drilled (73 wells total), well above the norm for active operators.

There have been 35 reported oil spills at Verdad locations in the last 10 years, including 3 in the past 12 months. Remediation efforts have included excavation of at least 380 dump truck loads of contaminated soil.
